Cold Sore Remedies: a Quick Guide!

The Herpes Simplex virus can easily cause a simple disease in childhood called as Fever Blisters. But the virus does have the tendency to go into hibernation in the human body during childhood. During times of high stress, anxiety, fever, colds and a weakened human immune system, the virus comes out again and causes sores in the oral cavity. These are called as cold sores. The virus first manifests as an extremely painful area followed by a tiny cluster of white blisters and followed by a single extremely unsightly painful blister. Although there is no treatment for the condition, you can try to control the disease and the symptoms. Simple remedies for cold sores include-

Lemon balm is commonly used to treat cold sores as they come up. It has really strong antiviral properties and is regularly used in naturopathic clinics to treat the ulcer stage of cold sores. Use medically prepared lemon balm cream to regularly to reduce the disease and its symptoms.

Lysine is a valuable mineral component found commonly in high protein foods. This is a mineral found commonly in all proteins but for some reason it does seem to limit the spread of the Herpes simplex virus. You can find lysine naturally in red meat, eggs, wheat germ, brewers yeast and all high protein sources. But it’s a better idea to use lysine supplements that work better to control the virus. Recommended doses include 1000 mg taken three times a day.

Reisha is a mushroom that is used in Asian medicinal methods to treat and protect the immune system. Research has proved that the supplement does work. You can try to use about 600 mg of the supplement at least one or two times a day. Check with a professional naturopathic doctor to ensure that the supplement can work for your. A few doctors do recommend that Reisha be combined with Astralagus for best effects.

Peppermint oil is another natural alternative that works well to control cold sores. You can use the oil as a topical application to control the virus from spreading on limiting its application. Please be advised that the oil is extremely toxic if ingested and small amounts of the oil are easily absorbed through the skin. Do not use the oil if you have allergic tendencies too.

Bee propolis is another commonly used supplement to control cold sores. This brown resinous substance is collected by bees from plants and flowers and is used to cement hives and keep them germ free. But the material is also great to prevent replication of the Herpes Simplex virus.

The herbs Prunella Vulgaris, Echinacea, Black Currant, Rhubarb and Sage Cream are also great to boost the immune system to prevent the Herpes Simplex virus from causing cold sores.

Although this may seem funny, it also helps if you have a healthy body with a good immune system. Try eating a healthy diet with an increased amount of fresh vegetables, fruits and white meats. Try to change your lifestyle to ensure that you have more exercise in your daily life. Even thirty minutes of brisk walking will increase your immunity and your health by ten fold.

One thing to remember is that you have to check with your doctor to find out which medications are the best for you. Do not use self prescribed medication or combine it with anything without asking your doctor or naturopathic physician. Do not take any herbal medication especially if you have a poor immune system like in AIDS, Leukemia, and Diabetes etc. Please do consult your doctor if you are already on medications before you add any herbal medication to your daily regime.
